Fluorescent Light Bulbs Can Now Be Recycled at Home Depot
Home Depot has just announced that they’ve started a recycling program in the USA for compact fluorescent light bulbs.
For those of you not yet aware, these bulbs each contain 3-5 mg of mercury. The EPA has determined that this level of mercury is high enough to be considered a health hazard, especially with repeated exposure, and has been exploring collection programs of its own, such as putting collection containers at post offices.
While the energy saving benefits of fluorescent light bulbs are great, proper disposal is essential.
Home Depot already administers a similar program in Canada. The program will run in all of their stores, and any bulbs can be returned, not just those they’ve sold.

Good to know Home Depot will take the bulbs. I’ve got a few now and wish I could find a place that takes bulbs and batteries. I think our local hazardous waste facility takes them, but it’s a good drive.

I wrote about this on my blog too a little bit ago. I don’t think most people know not to just throw them in the garbage, so it’s good you’re spreading the word of the proper way to dispose of the flourescent bulbs. Enjoy the Green It Carnival!

@ Scott and Chris- Nice that you’re spreading the word, too. I think a lot of saving the planet is simply an awareness thing. Most people would do the best thing if they knew what that was. I struggle with it all the time. - Thanks for the comments- Lisa
