How Politics Can Mess Up a Perfectly Good Environment

Here’s just one example. If you breath air, you might want to take a look.

The Bush administration and EPA have developed a reputation for interfering with resultant policy based on scientific research.

The latest-

March 11th, 2008 - The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proudly announces that it has reduced ground level ozone ( smog ) from 80 parts per billion (ppb) to 75 ppb, in spite of pressure by the Bush administration to maintain the 80 ppb standard.

April 11th, 2008 - the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC), a group of independent scientists appointed by the EPA in November, 2007, to oversee and make conclusions regarding recent environmental ozone research, formerly lashes out at the EPA for ignoring their recommendation to reduce smog levels from 80 ppb to 50-60 ppb.

Further more -

“the committee said it remained convinced that the EPA’s concentration level “fails to … ensure an adequate margin of safety” for the elderly, children and people with respiratory illnesses.”

The letter “also criticized the EPA for not further strengthening a separate smog standard aimed at protecting forests, agricultural lands and the ecosystem, saying such action was “scientifically well justified.”

Meanwhile, the Bush Administration has two of their own advisory boards maintaining that 80 ppb is just fine.

Apr 28th, 2008- 1586 respondents to a survey sent to over 5000 EPA scientists revealed that more than half “had experienced political interference in their work.”

and further-

“The survey respondents were split over the impact of political interference on regulations. According to the report, 48% believed that the EPA’s actions were “frequently or always” consistent with scientific findings, and 47% believed that agency policy “occasionally, seldom or never” made use of scientific judgments.

May 6th, 2008 - Two acting consultants to the EPA are sounding off about government interferences on climate policy, the Wall Street Journal reports. They describe the Bush administration’s Cap and Trade Policy of limiting total emissions while allowing companies to trade unused pollution rights as nearly impossible to administer, and a deterrent to the development of newer more environmentally friendly technologies.

Bottom line: The Bush administration’s environmental policies are abysmal. Time and time again, they ignore contrary scientific evidence, and work to reverse or inplement environmental policies which are detrimental to our health.

And would McCain be any different?

  1. Two of my four children have asthma, and many of their friends do. It was rare for people to have it twenty years ago. Thank you, Mr. Bush.

  2. I think your panicking like any good left wing liberal! I don’t believe a word of it. I just bought a Dodge Ram pick-up. Chrysler has a promotion where they’ve locked in my cost per gallon of gas at $2.99/gal for the next three years.

  3. Interesting approach by commenter Sam. If I don’t believe in it, it’s not really happening. I’m going to try that with the Iraq War.
