Shall I Take the Hummer or the Bicycle?
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (AS) directly challenged Rajendra K. Pachauri, the head of the Nobel prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC), and it wasn’t pretty.
“Going Green Can be Fun” said the governor, at a recently held climate change conference at Yale University. Stating that he “isn’t about to give up his jacuzzi, or his hummers,” He defended the industrialized world’s energy guzzling lifestyle, even as Pachauri denounced it. In his keynote speech, Pachauri said “excessive consumption of fossil fuels is a key factor to climate change, and the developed world needs to bear the burden of reducing their usage if we are to be successful combating it.”
Surprisingly, both these guys are heading toward the same Global Nirvana.
But Arnold is driving there in his hummer while inhaling a few Big Macs. And Pachauri? He’s negotiating pot holes on his bicycle, munching on wild hickory nuts.
Look again! That hummer is powered by hydrogen. Turns out AS has become an environmental technology fanatic. He has another hummer running on biofuel. He’s installing solar panels to heat his home. He supports companies such as Tesla, the manufacturers of a 100% electric powered roadster.
In fact, since his re-election as California’s Governor in 2003, he’s staunchly advocated for the environment, believing that we can come up with technological solutions that will allow us to keep our toys.
His Philosophy: We’ve been trashing the environment inadvertently for the last 100 years. Now we know better. Let’s start doing things right.
Funny. That’s what Pachauri says.
