My Own War Against Inflation
I’m securing my bomb shelter, ready to do battle with my arch foe, Inflation Man. He’s insidiously infiltrating my world, a guerilla camouflaged in Burnankeian Green, besieging the U.S. economy with surprising ease- and my house value and bank interest are dropping, while my fuel costs and grocery bills are rising.
It’s a bizarro world from a year ago, when I was planning my honeymoon in Italy. Little did I know that when we got there, the weakening dollar would have us buying cold cuts and wine at the local groceria, eating many meals in our hotel room. It was my first sign of what was to come.
So now, a year later, no matter what the experts say, I know the recession is here. I feel it in my bones and in my wallet. And I’m hunkering down- driving less, bargain hunting more, putting on a sweater rather than turning up the thermostat. Perhaps I’ll grow more vegetables and less flowers in my garden this year. We’ll grow our own herbs, and can our own jam.
I’ve lived through a recession before. I can’t see it yet, but I know there’s light at the end of the tunnel.
The piper just needs his due.
