Here are ten habits that my spouse and I practice to help the planet. Some of them save us a little money as well. Note that we also practice the “80/20 Rule” about them (that means if we accomplish them 80% of the time we pat ourselves on the back).

So, tell me some of yours! Just a quick comment, we’ll list them out-

We:

  • Recycle. It is mandatory in our town now.
  • Try to purchase from companies that support sustainability. (see the link “Better World Shopper” under Green Links on the left).
  • Use those cloth grocery bags they are selling in all the stores now instead of plastic bags. The other option here is to just reuse your plastic grocery bags. We seem to have accumulated hundreds of them. I am not exaggerating! OK, maybe a little.
  • Wash and reuse plastic food storage bags.
  • Receive our utility and credit card bills electronically rather than by regular mail.
  • Buy Fair Trade products.
  • E-mail our local congressmen once in a while about pertinent environmental topics. Here’s a link to help you find out who the are: Link
  • Buy local. Joined a local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) Farm. You have to pay up front, but will actually pay less per week in the long run. Here’s a link to find one in your area: CSA Search
  • Buy clothing at one of our local thrift shops. The town we live in has two great ones. This is a really fun habit.
  • Take public transportation or walk once in a while.
