The Energy Challenge

Digg!

The attached interview with Jeroen van der Veer, 60, Royal Dutch Shell’s chief executive, discusses global energy challenges for the next 50 years.
In summary:

  • There will be a huge increased demand for energy in two dramatic ways. First, the world’s population will increase from 6 billion to 9 billion by 2050. Second, developing countries are climbing the “energy ladder”, requiring more and more energy resources to support their economic growth.
  • Conventional energy sources such as oil and gas will still be available, but easily accessible sources are becoming depleted. It will become more and more expensive to obtain these fossil fuels.
  • Alternative energy sources could become less expensive. And many consumers are willing to pay extra for energy that sustains the planet.
  • A major problem will be accessibility to these alternative sources. Global Cooperation and economic motivations are needed to ensure a transition from environmentally damaging fossil fuels to alternative energies conducive to sustaining our planet.
